RailRiders Give Childhood Brain Tumor Survivor VIP Experience

Blog |

At Vs. Cancer and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, we get starstruck daily. Our Stars are the 28,000 children in the U.S. living with a brain tumor diagnosis, and each day they teach us about strength, perseverance and why the fight to save their lives cannot stop until there is a cure.

Vs. Cancer fundraising teams often ask how they can connect with one of our Stars, and we’re always thrilled to hear this request. Any special experience we can provide for one of these extraordinary kids is one we are happy to offer.

Recently, twelve-year-old Star Keegan was able to attend the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders’ (Triple-A/New York Yankees) Vs. Cancer game, and the team made sure he felt like a V.I.P.

Keegan’s Story:

Keegan was an eight-year-old active young man when he started having chronic headaches – headaches so bad he would blackout. On September 28, 2014, Keegan was diagnosed with a brain tumor located in his cerebellum (housed in the back of the brain). The tumor had begun to grow into his spinal cord. He was given emergency surgery, lasting nine and a half hours, to remove his tumor. After surgery, Keegan had to learn to walk again. He spent weeks in the hospital and months in occupational and physical therapy. Keegan is still dealing with side effects from his tumor, like many pediatric brain tumor survivors, but he is a fighter.

Keegan loves sports, but he is unfortunately no longer able to participate in athletics because of his tumor. He appreciates seeing athletes giving back, and Keegan and his family jumped at the chance to attend the RailRiders’ game.

The front office staff with the RailRiders presented Keegan with his own personalized jersey upon arrival.

He was then granted the opportunity to throw out the game’s ceremonial first pitch!

And the team provided game tickets for Keegan and his family – great seats!

Experiences like these mean the world to our Stars and their families. They also help connect our supporters to the mission of Vs. Cancer and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

Thank you to the players and staff of the RailRiders for providing this incredible opportunity and continued support.
