A Note from Coach Joe Breschi

Every year I am blown away not just by the talent on the field at UNC, but by the character of the student athletes I have the pleasure of coaching. A huge part of that is the difference we try to make in our community, bringing the team together to fight for a cause larger than themselves. For the past four years we have worked with Vs. Cancer, raising money to help kids fighting cancer right in our backyard. I am a father and my kids are not affected by cancer, so my team and I are helping those kids are fighting for their lives every day.

Four years ago, Brett Bedard stepped onto the field at UNC as a freshman. He was a four-year starter, an incredible athlete and a survivor of childhood cancer. This disease affected one of my guys. This was real, and more so, our guys knew they could do something about it.

Half of the proceeds go to national pediatric brain tumor research to find a cure, and the other half back to the children’s hospital we visit regularly in Chapel Hill, UNC Lineberger Cancer Center.

The guys embraced it. They are invested and they are giving back to combat a cause that one of their own teammates was impacted by. Vs. Cancer made it simple to make that happen and now it’s an integral part of our program.

I hope you’ll consider getting your lacrosse team involved, bringing your players together to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves—kids fighting cancer.
